Short description:

The aim of the course is extension of the knowledge concerning solution thermodynamics, acquisition of information about colloidal systems their properties role in our world.

Learning outcomes:

Student:

E1. Defines partial molar and excess thermodynamic functions, chemical potentials and thermodynamic functions of mixing.

Method and Criteria of Assessment:

The grade of seminar consists of: grades from one written mid-term test evaluating the effects of training in the knowledge and skills: (E1-E6,E9).

Assessment of laboratory consist of performance of 4 exercises, elaboration of the results in the form of a written report and a grade from a test valuating the effects of training in the knowledge and skills: (E1-E8).

The grade of the lecture consists of grade written test evaluating the effects of training (E1,E3 - E5,E7 - E8) (50%).

The final grade is mean value of grade from lecture(20%) and from seminar (40%) and laboratory (40%).


Course Content:

Thermodynamic of solutions. Partial molar quantities. Gibbs-Duhem, Duhem-Margules relations. Methods of determination of partial molar quantities on the basis of experimental data and the relations between them. Chemical potentials. Temperature and pressure dependence of chemical potentials in case of gases and condensed phases. Mixing functions of ideal solutions gaseous and liquid. Ideal solutions - Raoults law, and ideal-dilute solutions - Henry's law. Colligative properties. Real solutions - deviations from ideality. Excess functions. Activities and activity coefficients. Determination of activity coefficients on the basis of vapour pressure measurements. Activity scales. Reference states and standard states. Temperature and pressure dependence of activity coefficients. Osmotic coefficient.

Colloidal systems. Classification of colloid systems. Properties of colloid solutions.
