Eastern Europe is a contested space, both geographically and politically. In this course we will take a historical, anthropological, and stylistic approach to the region, attempting to answer the questions: What is cinema’s relation to politics and the state; what styles did ideological Communism engender; and which are the cultural determinants of the region that make or do not make this space cohesive? Seeking to look beyond the socialist realism genre and the politically contestatory works of the so-called dissident directors, we will investigate the cinematic production of socialism from a non-biased perspective. ... |
