Short description:

Short research project in organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, electrochemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, theoretical chemistry, environmental chemistry, nanotechnology, etc. This module allows students to carry out a laboratory-based project on a topic related to his/her main area of study, to explain the results and describe the background material. The aim of this module is to allow students to carry out a laboratory-based project on a topic related to his/her main area of study, to explain the results and describe the background material. Each student will be allocated to a project which includes both practical and theoretical components. The theory component will consist of a short review of the literature relating to the experimental component of the project. The laboratory work will be related to the supervisor’s area of research. Each student is assigned to a team supervisor who will advise on and direct the project and the preparation of a written report.

Learning outcomes:

Having successfully completed this module student will be able to:

• Produce a report on an independent laboratory-based project, which contains a short introduction (about 1,500 words) to the background scientific literature

• Design and test scientific hypotheses

• Design and perform laboratory experiments.

• Collect, record and interpret laboratory data.

Student:

EW1. Explain the basics of experiments, interpret laboratory data, draw conclusion and is able to point out possible outcomes of conducted research based on literature knowledge

EW2. Defines laboratory safety rules and work organization in laboratory

EU1. Prepare research project on the subjected scientific proposal

EU2. Conduct measurements according to the research plan based on available basic and advanced techniques, methods and apparatus

EU3. Describes and verifies the conducted research results based on statistical approach

EU4. Interpret collected data and carry out conclusions

EU5. Reach and process information from different scientific sources

EU6. Prepare laboratory documentation and presents research results of its own and the whole research team

EK1. Cooperate in the research team

EK2. Follow scientific ethics principles
